Grade 5.2 2016-2017
Realising our potential
groupsG5.2 was very excited this morning to be heading off into the Middle School! With their bags on their back they headed to the MS Hall to do some peer bonding and check in with mindfulness. They then split into two groups and found out about Science, Math and Language classes. Mr. Taylor spoke to them about the difference between PYP and MYP. So many smiles were seen as they make their way to being part of the MS community!

Please see Mr. Pinchbeck's blog isspaterson.weebly.com/ for full details regarding our Swim Gala on Monday, June 5th.
As Grade 5 students prepare for Middle School, they will be participating in MS Transition Days on Wednesday May 31st and Thursday June 1st. They will have the opportunity to experience some of the changes for Middle School, like moving from class to class and having a variety of teachers. Hopefully this will help them feel more comfortable with the transition and be able to find answers to their questions. On Thursday afternoon they will watch a performance of our school production of "Into the Woods". Dismissal will be as per usual. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.
As some of us are packing our bags to move from Singapore, you may want to keep the Food Bank in mind. If you have uneaten cans of food and/or unopened food packages that would be suitable to donate to the Food Bank, please bring it in to the office before June 10th.
On Friday, 26th of May the theme will be "Food Day", in which students can dress as their favourite food. This is in support of our work with working towards Zero Hunger and the Singapore Food Bank. Students should bring a non-perishable food item or a monetary donation.
May 26th 6:00-7:00 pm PYP / MYP Art Exhibition
June 5th PYP Swim Gala (12 noon dismissal) On Tuesday all the Grade 5 students were learning about puberty. All the Grade 5 girls were meeting in a class but the grade 5 boys were in another class. We were talking about puberty and periods. We did it for our UOI (Who We Are) because the whole grade 5 were learning about puberty and how it affects us. To help us learn more we were watching a video and looking at pictures and a booklet about puberty. My opinion is that us learning about puberty is kind of weird because we are still young and we are only pre-teens. But it is good to learn about it because we are going to be in grade 6 and we can also learn a lot of science words.
G5.2 students showed their collaborative thinking about some of the emotions they experience, especially as they enter puberty. First we found out what is anxiety and then shared our learning. Next we thought about what makes us feel this way and connected to ways we can cope with these emotions. Our discussion led us to the advantages or disadvantages of some of these ways to cope with stress, worry, anger and anxiety.
Enthusiasm was buzzing through G5.2 today as they started to explore their inquiry into measurement. First, students unpacked what they already knew about our central idea: Different procedures exist to measure the mass and capacity of objects and time of events. Questions began to be asked which we then shared as a whole group. Next we started to find out about capacity using an organiser based upon the Frayer model to help us understand.
